First Edition

weekly x 15 minutes for 4Learning

First Edition was a news and current affairs programme for 9 -13s, presented by Jon Snow. It ran for nine years on Channel 4 Schools and provided up-to-the-minute news and analysis. Young people were given the chance to interview people in power and have their say on current affairs issues.

We made 195 programmes for which we filmed 198 items with young people throughout the United Kingdom. From Orkney to the Isle of Wight, Northern Ireland to Northumberland and all points in between.
For a global view special visits were arranged to meet children in Hong Kong, Africa and India.

The stories covered topics such as teenage mums, dangerous dogs and ballet boys. We looked at issues such as AIDS, Chatrooms, Gun Crime and Unisex Loos. We met a one-legged footballer, a rocket scientist, a Greyhound trainer and Huskey racer….all under 13!

We reconstructed a cliff rescue, a railway accident, escape from a house fire and an aeroplane crash.

Wherever there was a good story involving young people we were there, giving them the opportunity to tell us just what happened.

The programmes came to an end in November 2002.
